heterodox – adjective [het-er-uh-doks]
1. not in accordance with established or accepted doctrines or opinions, especially in theology; unorthodox.
2. holding unorthodox doctrines or opinions.

Description:
“Heterodox” is a screendance that recalls events leading to the uprising and violent protests of June 28, 1969, which birthed the modern-day gay civil rights movement. A mass of dancers display herd mentality, while conveying motifs of identity, compliance, curiosity, defiance, and acceptance. The divinity of the body is asserted, rather than mortification of the flesh. Featured among the ensemble are two dancers engaged in pas de deux–one asserts dominance over the other and spurs the acceptance of identity.
“It was a subtly erotic, and funny, celebration of freedom that never lets go of a basic fact: liberation is an unstable state.” -Annie Hollingsworth, on “Heterodox” and 42.

“Heterodox” was presented on June 28, 2011 at the Bass Museum of Art in the Sol M. Taplin Gallery, as part of the evening-length production 42: A Stonewall Prospective. The performance featured live contemporary dance, film, and large scale props in a multidisciplinary performance to recall the events leading to the uprising and violent protests of June 28, 1969, which birthed the modern-day gay civil rights movement.
